I know this theory has probably been stated before. Possibly even here. But after watching my two dogs for a while, I am mostly convinced that dogs communicate telepathically, and this whole barking thing is just a front. A way of saying, "Hey you! I'm talking to you! And no one else listen in, or I'll spam your brain with a detailed list of everything I smelled this morning!"
